Cyber attacks on businesses around the world are on the rise, and Africa is not spared. These attacks cost businesses productivity, revenue, and client trust besides the personal security of its patrons. For example: The Wannacry ransomware attack of May 2017 has hit 150 countries which includes many African countries as well.

Most of the organizations in Zambia are not considering cyber threats as a serious issue. The Zambian businesses are not even prepared to tackle whenever a cyber security threat occurs.

Companies must be prepared for cyber-attacks and get cyber resilient because the threat is ever-present and ever growing. It is high time that the Zambian Government must invest largely in cyber-security because cyber criminals can hit everyone across the globe. The criminals will start to target vulnerable nations, like Zambia, which are not quite prepared for such attacks.

Security should contribute to the enterprise’s growth embodied in its long-term strategy. Moreover, the company should build its cyber capabilities by raising awareness of and building employees’ skills in information security, securing the configurations and regularly updating its infrastructure and systems, using technologies for active surveillance, implementing proactive detection and rapid response to security breaches and incidents, and performing regular security audits and penetration testing.

Greater accessibility of mobile devices has seen digital connectivity spread throughout Zambia. Keeping people safer online is an enormous task and no establishment or government has the perfect solution. But there is something which can be done to strengthen prevention and improve responses to cyber-crime.

The people should be educated about cyber security from school level. The Government should provide Information and Communication Technology user education on cyber-security and helps the people to develop skills in cyber security.

Cyber crime is not going to evaporate. Governments must take adequate steps to help their citizens manage this social risk and ensure cyber security in Zambia. This will protect incomes, reputations, personal and sensitive information and generally improve resilience across the board.
